Gaucher of Chatillon, 1312-1322, Florennes
Gaucher of Châtillon (1249-1329) was lord of Châtillon, Count of Porcien and Constable of France.
He was the son of Gaucher IV of Châtillon and Isabella of Villehardouin, or Isabella of Lesignies, and the grandson of Hugh I of Châtillon, Count of Blois and Saint-Pol.
He was one of the chief advisers of both Joanna I, Queen of Navarre and Countess of Champagne, and her son Louis, the future French king. 1286 he was appointed constable of Champagne.
In 1297 he led the French army against Henry III, Count of Bar, the ally of the Count of Flanders. He participated in the fight against Kortrijk and the Battle of the Golden Spurs on 8 July 1302 and then became Constable of France. He played a prominent role in the French victory at Mons-en-Pévèle on 18 August 1304.
Gaucher amassed an enormous fortune in the form of lands and royal pensions and rose to a princely rank. He is one of the representatives of Mahaut, Countess of Artois in the marriage contract of her daughter Blanche of Burgundy with the future king, Charles IV of France. He handed Châtillon and Crécy over to the king and bought the county Château-Porcien in 1302. Numerous diplomatic missions have been entrusted to him. In 1307 he had the future king Louis X crowned to King of Navarre in Pamplona, mediated in the peace between Charles, Count of Valois and John I, Marquis of Namur, and participated in several negotiations with England. As a confidant of King Philip VI of France he led the negotiations of 1325 and 1326. In 1328 he commanded an army corps in the Battle of Cassel.
